How much added sugar is too much?

This is the topic of today’s discussion

Hi, my name is Dr. Daneschvar; today I would like to welcome you to a new episode of Weekly Health News Updates.

The problem with adding sugar to our foods is a crucial public health issue.

Added sugar is often hidden in our nutrition and it is very difficult to notice.

What is added sugar?

First let me explain what is considered added sugar.

Added sugar is the sugar that you find in processed foods.

On average, an individual in United States consumes around 22 teaspoons added sugar a day.

One important thing that you should know is that one teaspoon contains 4 grams of sugar and  1 gram of sugar has 4 calories, therefore one teaspoon of sugar has 16 calories.

Why is added sugar bad?

High blood sugar intake has been associated with heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, and even dementia. A diet rich in added sugar has shown to increase the risk of heart disease even if the individual is not overweight, according to a study published in 2014.

Which foods contain a lot of added sugar?

The most commonly known foods that contain added sugar are sweets such as candies, cake, soda, chocolates and juices. There are other foods that are not sweet but still contain some added sugar such as yogurt, bread, salad dressings, spaghetti sauce, barbecue sauces and cereals.

How do you find how much added sugar is in your food?

Unfortunately, there is no way to find out how much added sugar is in the food that you buy. But hopefully, things will soon change. The new nutrition facts on food packaging will include a label for added sugar. Manufacturers will need to use this new label by July 26, 2018. Until that point, I would suggest looking at the total amount of sugar, not the carbohydrates to distinguish between the products.

How much added sugar is too much?

For most American women, that’s no more than 100 calories (24 gram) per day, or about 6 teaspoons of sugar. For men, it’s 150 calories (37 gram) per day, or about 9 teaspoons.
